Features of a "Professional Website" Part 4 of 5

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: MARCH 19, 2004

Last month we discussed Logical Organization, Consistent Look and Feel, and Appropriate Use of a Database – all features of a professional website. This month we will look at the next three.

7. Fast Navigation

Navigational menus should contain seven + or – three items. So, if youhave a menu with seven items, and each item has a sub menu with seven items, then up to 50 web pages in a site can easily live within one click from each other. www.settlerswestcontemporary.com makes use of fast and consistent navigation.

8. Target Audience

Who do you expect the primary users of your web page will be? Whatis the purpose of the web site? Usually, the more focused the site is with regards to target audience, the more effective the site will be. www.buglogical.com has a target audience of adults 35 and up.

9. Optimized Images

Have you ever waited for minutes for pictures and images to load while surfing the Internet? 90% of the time this is caused because the weight of the image is two large. By image weight I mean the size in Kilobytes (thousands of bytes) not the width or height of the image. This third dimension of weight is what determines how long it takes to download the image.

Next month we will look at the tenth feature of a professional web site: A Goal.
